Last night I spent most of my time looking for a relatively quiet/safe spot to weave. Because it’s easier for me to walk around the neighbourhood I’m staying in (and used to live in for 2yrs), I found myself back in the advertising district.
I attracted an audience last night: 2 tourists that needed parking help but then asked me what I was doing. I told them I was weaving and that it was an art project. I told them it was kinda’ like graffiti, but not permanent, and I liked the concept that I could weave anywhere such as in between parking signs. They each liked the process and the initial stages; an older Italian gentleman remarked his grandmother used to weave. He asked me why I was doing this at night- “Because it’s illegal?” I said, “Maybe…” but it’s because I work during the day and can’t. I wish I could do this during the day, but then I thought, would I have as much anonymity during the day? Probably not… He wished me good luck and safety; the third gentleman asked me very politely what I was doing.
I ended up weaving paper flower like forms into the surface in an homage to Cy Twombly’s Peonies paintings.
