“Untitled (The Bride), Pt 1” Mixed Media Fibers, 17” x 20.5” x 1.5”. 2023.

I recently had my first “Karen” experience. It was traumatic… A friend & I own an artist rep agency of hair & makeup artists for weddings & events. We had a former bridal client completely lose it on us because she was unable to work with the hair & makeup artist of her choice due to a conflict in schedule. Her reaction & subsequent methodology of unleashing her fury of not getting her way exactly was, to be quite honest, I have no words…

As I tried to process the event while driving one day, a weaving popped into my head as I passed a gated parking lot.

We use makeup to enhance the features we naturally have, or we use it to try to completely change ourselves. Like wearing a mask.

But makeup can only temporarily cover and change our features so much.

Technically- this weaving was tricky to do. Weaving on a chain link fence as your warp makes you piece, well, warped… You’re basically using diamonds instead of straight lines for a warp.

So, she’s a sloppy weave for sure.

I used white because the piece is inspired by a Western bride who traditionally wears a white dress, and added blue & pink for decorative touches, like makeup.

But as you can see- no matter what you do to the exterior, you can’t completely cover up what’s inside. Our true selves always pop through;)
